Continuing the journey towards a more perfect union from "summary" of A Promised Land by Barack Obama
I never expected that my election as president would usher in a post-racial society or eliminate the deep-rooted divisions in our country. The idea of a "more perfect union" has always been aspirational rather than a destination we could definitively reach. Throughout our history, progress has been halting, marked by setbacks and struggles against the forces of bigotry, inequality, and injustice.
In my time in office, I sought to push us closer to that ideal, to continue the work of those who came before me and lay the foundation for those who would follow. It was a daunting task, made more difficult by the entrenched interests and entrenched prejudices that stood in the way of change. But I believed then, as I believe now, that the arc of history bends towards justice, and that our collective efforts can move us forward, however slowly.
The journey towards a more perfect union is not a straight line, but a winding path with twists and turns. It requires us to confront uncomfortable truths about our past and present, to acknowledge the ways in which we have fallen short of our ideals, and to commit ourselves to doing better. It demands that we listen to those whose voices have been marginalized or ignored, and to work together to build a more just and equitable society.
As I reflect on my time in office, I am reminded of the progress we made, but also of how far we still have to go. The challenges we face today – from racial injustice to economic inequality to political polarization – are daunting, but not insurmountable. If we are willing to engage with empathy, to listen with humility, and to act with courage, then we can continue the journey towards a more perfect union, one step at a time.
