Bin Laden raid was a moment of triumph from "summary" of A Promised Land by Barack Obama
The raid on Osama bin Laden's compound was a high-stakes operation that could have easily gone wrong in a hundred different ways. The risk of failure was significant. If bin Laden had managed to slip away, the political and security consequences would have been dire. But if things had gone south - if the SEALs had been captured or killed, or if the helicopter had crashed - it would have been a disaster of epic proportions. In the Situation Room that night, as we monitored the progress of the operation, the tension was palpable. There was no room for error. The fate of our country, and the lives of those brave men carrying out the mission, hung in the balance. And then, finally, came the word we had all been waiting for: "Geronimo."
In that moment, all the planning and preparation paid off. The SEALs had successfully carried out their mission, eliminating the man responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. It was a moment of vindication for the intelligence professionals who had worked tirelessly to track bin Laden down. It was a moment of closure for the families of those who had perished on 9/11. And it was a moment of triumph for our country as a whole.
But even in that moment of triumph, there was no sense of triumphalism. We knew that the fight against terrorism was far from over. We knew that bin Laden's death would not bring back those we had lost, or erase the pain and suffering that had been inflicted on so many. We knew that the struggle would continue, and that more sacrifices would be required.
The raid on bin Laden's compound was a reminder of the complexity and difficulty of the challenges we faced as a nation. It was a reminder of the courage and skill of our military and intelligence professionals. And it was a reminder of the resilience and determination of the American people. It was a moment of triumph, yes. But it was also a moment of reflection, of remembrance, and of renewed resolve.
