During the modern period, which began in the sixteenth century, Europeans developed a new way of looking at the world. Scholars such as Copernicus and Galileo proposed a heliocentric universe, in which the earth revolved around the sun. This challenged the traditional Christian view of a geocentric universe, in which the earth was at the center of creation. As a result, people began to question the authority of the Church and the Bible in matters of science. The development of new scientific ideas led to a shift in the concept of God.
