During the Enlightenment, a group of thinkers emerged who were determined to apply reason to all areas of human life, including religion. These Enlightenment philosophers believed that traditional religious beliefs were based on superstition and myth rather than rational thought. They sought to question and challenge these beliefs in order to bring about a more enlightened and rational society. Enlightenment thinkers were critical of the authority of religious institutions and leaders, believing that they had too much power and influence over people's lives. They argued that individuals should be free to think for themselves and come to their own conclusions about the nature of God and the universe, rather than blindly accepting the teachings of organized religion.
