Vann was a man of unwavering belief in the American mission in Vietnam. He possessed a boundless optimism that seemed to be impervious to the harsh realities of the war. His faith in the ability of the United States to prevail in Vietnam was unshakeable, despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Vann's confidence in the ultimate success of the American effort was reflected in his tireless efforts to train and advise the South Vietnamese forces. However, as the war dragged on and the situation on the ground deteriorated, Vann's optimism began to wane. The brutal nature of the conflict, the staggering loss of life, and the lack of progress in achieving the stated objectives of the war all took a toll on Vann's spirit.
