According to the theory of quantum mechanics, pairs of particles and antiparticles are constantly being created out of nothing near the event horizon of a black hole. One of these particles falls into the black hole, while the other escapes into space. This process causes the black hole to lose mass, as the particle that falls in carries negative energy with it. As a result, the black hole appears to emit radiation, known as Hawking radiation.
