Economic freedom equals political freedom from "summary" of Capitalism and Freedom by Milton Friedman
The relationship between economic freedom and political freedom is a fundamental one. Both are essential for individual liberty and a well-functioning society. Economic freedom is the freedom to choose how to allocate one's resources, whether it be through work, investment, or consumption. It is the ability to engage in voluntary transactions with others without interference from the government. When individuals have the freedom to make economic choices, they are also more likely to demand political freedom. This is because economic freedom empowers individuals to become independent and self-reliant, making them less dependent on the government for their well-being. As a result, they are more likely to resist government encroachment on their political rights.
Conversely, when economic freedom is restricted, individuals are more likely to become dependent on the government for their livelihood. This dependence can erode their ability to resist government overreach into their political lives. Therefore, the erosion of economic freedom can lead to a corresponding erosion of political freedom.
This relationship is not merely theoretical. History has shown time and again that societies that embrace economic freedom also tend to have more robust political freedoms. Conversely, societies that restrict economic freedom often also restrict political freedom. The two are closely intertwined, each reinforcing the other.
In order to preserve political freedom, it is essential to protect and promote economic freedom. This means advocating for policies that limit government intervention in the economy, such as free markets, property rights, and the rule of law. By doing so, we can ensure that individuals have the autonomy and independence necessary to demand and maintain their political rights.
