Explore/exploit tradeoff is crucial in balancing exploration and exploitation from "summary" of Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian,Tom Griffiths

When faced with the decision of exploring new options or exploiting what we already know, we encounter a fundamental tradeoff. Exploration involves trying out unfamiliar choices to potentially discover better ones, while exploitation means sticking with what has worked in the past to maximize gains. Balancing these two strategies is crucial in various aspects of life, from deciding on a restaurant to choosing a career path. The explore/exploit tradeoff can be seen in the context of the multi-armed bandit problem, where a gambler must decide which slot machine to play in order to maximize their winnings. The gambler faces the dilemma of exploring different machines to find the one with the highest payout (exploration) or sticking with the machine that has yielded good results so far (exploitation). This problem illustrates the tension between trying new options and sticking with what is known to be effective. In the real world, we are constantly faced with similar decisions that require us to navigate the explore/exploit tradeoff. For example, when looking for a new restaurant to try, we can either explore unfamiliar cuisines or exploit our knowledge of tried-and-true favorites. Similarly, in a job search, we can explore new industries and roles or exploit our skills and experience in a familiar field. Finding the right balance between exploration and exploitation is key to making optimal decisions. Too much exploration can lead to missed opportunities for gain, while too much exploitation can result in stagnation and missed opportunities for growth. By understanding the tradeoff between exploration and exploitation, we can make more informed decisions that maximize our chances of success.
