Social class distinction from "summary" of 1984 by George Orwell
In "1984", social class distinction is a major theme. This is demonstrated through the manipulation of citizens of each class, as well as the differences in life-style and resources. Society is divided into three different classes, the Inner Party, Outer Party and Proles, with the Inner Party living the most privileged life and the Proles living in poverty.- Different types of people fell into different social classes. Those who were born in a higher class had more privileges than those born in a lower one.
- Individuals belonging to certain social classes were expected to conform to a set of societal norms and follow specific rules.
- Upper class citizens were far better off financially and did not have to worry about basic necessities such as food and shelter.
- There were strict divisions between the different classes which made it harder for them to interact and share experiences.
- Differences in social classes led to power struggles between the rich and the poor. This caused tension and unrest within society.
