The Proles, a term derived from the word "proletariat," make up the majority of the population in Oceania. They are the working class, toiling away in factories and on farms, living in squalid conditions and struggling to make ends meet. They are uneducated, ignorant of the Party's propaganda, and largely left to their own devices. The Party views them as insignificant, as long as they do not pose a threat to their power. The Proles represent the oppressed working class, kept in check by the Party's surveillance and manipulation. Despite their bleak existence, the Proles have a certain freedom that the Party members do not. They are not subjected to the constant surveillance and indoctrination that the Party imposes on its members. They are allowed to live relatively freely, as long as they do not engage in any activities that could be seen as subversive.
