Do Not Shield Your Child from Failure from "summary" of 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do by Amy Morin
One of the most important things parents can do for their children is to resist the urge to shield them from failure. While it's natural to want to protect our kids from disappointment, setbacks, and rejection, doing so can actually hinder their mental strength.
Children who are shielded from failure don't have the opportunity to develop important skills like resilience, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. When parents constantly swoop in to prevent their kids from experiencing failure, they rob them of the chance to learn from their mistakes and grow stronger.
Instead of trying to shield your child from failure, it's important to teach them how to cope with it effectively. Encourage your child to take risks, try new things, and step outside of their comfort zone. When they inevitably face failure, help them process their emotions, reflect on what they can learn from the experience, and come up with a plan for moving forward.
By allowing your child to experience failure and supporting them through it, you're helping them build the mental strength they need to navigate life's inevitable challenges. Remember, failure is not the end of the road – it's an opportunity for growth and learning. As a parent, your job is to help your child see failure as a stepping stone to success, rather than a roadblock.
