Rumors and gossip play a big role in Hannah's decision from "summary" of 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Throughout Hannah's story, we see how rumors and gossip have a profound impact on her life. From the false stories spread about her to the hurtful words whispered behind her back, these rumors slowly chip away at her self-esteem and sense of worth. The rumors start off small, innocent enough, but they quickly snowball into something much bigger and more damaging. Hannah becomes known as the school's "slut," a reputation she didn't earn or deserve. But once the whispers start, they seem impossible to stop. They follow her wherever she goes, tainting every interaction and relationship she has. As the rumors escalate, Hannah finds herself isolated and alone. Friends she once trusted turn their backs on her, believing the lies instead of standing by her side. Even those who try to defend her end up getting caught in the crossfire, further fueling the fire of gossip and speculation. The weight of these rumors becomes too much for Hannah to bear. She begins to internalize the hate and negativity thrown her way, believing that she is, indeed, all the terrible things people say she is. She starts to see herself through the eyes of those spreading the rumors, losing sight of her true self in the process.
  1. It is this relentless onslaught of rumors and gossip that pushes Hannah over the edge. Feeling trapped and hopeless, she makes the decision to end her life, unable to see a way out of the darkness that has consumed her. Rumors and gossip may seem harmless on the surface, but in Hannah's case, they prove to be a destructive force that ultimately leads to tragedy.
