When you do something you despise, you can be certain that you are being motivated by something other than genuine love for yourself or others. You might be motivated by a desire to run from what you fear, or by a desire to exact revenge for some past slight. You might be trying to bolster a tottering ego, or to compete with someone who you feel has unfairly bested you. You might be trying to appear morally superior to others, as a way of demonstrating their failings. None of these motives are valid. None of them are true expressions of your own being.
