Do not do what you hate from "summary" of 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson
When you do something you despise, you can be certain that you are being motivated by something other than genuine love for yourself or others. You might be motivated by a desire to run from what you fear, or by a desire to exact revenge for some past slight. You might be trying to bolster a tottering ego, or to compete with someone who you feel has unfairly bested you. You might be trying to appear morally superior to others, as a way of demonstrating their failings. None of these motives are valid. None of them are true expressions of your own being. None of them offer you the genuine opportunity for self-regard that life requires for its meaningful sustenance. You are then possessed by a weakness that undermines your character and threatens your very existence. You are then on a road that does not lead to a good place. You are then, and inevitably, bound for hell, for that is where such paths inevitably lead. It is for this reason that you must pay careful attention to your resentment. Even the smallest hint that you are harbouring a secret grudge, or nursing hatred or cultivating a desire for revenge, must be heeded, because it means, in the immortal words of the Sermon on the Mount, that you have been angry without cause. And if you have been angry without genuine cause, then you have lost your way, and that is not good. That is not good at all. To do what you hate is to become possessed by those who do what they hate. It is to become one of them, voluntarily, to join their ranks. It is to lose yourself in the most direct of ways. It is to lose your soul, and then your life. It is to be one of those who Nietzsche described as monsters of resentment. It is to be one of those who are possessed by that most malevolent of emotions, and who will stop at nothing to hurt themselves and others.Similar Posts
