Summary of Wild Egg

Wild Egg is a novel by Margi Preus set on an isolated Maine island in the early 20th century. It tells the story of sixteen-year-old Callie, whose father abandoned her and her mother with a farm debt. Callie must care for both her mother, who is going blind, and her baby brother while trying to pay off the farm debt. As she does, she clashes with her stepfather, a cruel and manipulative man. Callie is helped by neighboring islanders who teach her how to use her ingenuity and the island’s resources. In the end, Callie finds a way to make her family’s future secure, while learning how to stand up for herself as well.
