The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere by Jürgen Habermas offers an in-depth analysis of how the concept of public sphere has evolved from its 18th-century origins to modern day. The author argues that during the enlightenment era, public sphere was used as an instrument to facilitate rational debate on democracy, free speech and public opinion. Habermas further shows how the 19th and 20th century witnessed increasing monopolies of information, congested decision making proceses and a move away from its original foundations of a free and open public sphere as the foundation of democratic public life. Throughout the book, Habermas discusses the struggles faced by modern societies to reclaim the public sphere as a tool for collective governance and maintaining public autonomy from outdated and autocratic governments and their ideologies.
