The Goose Moon, written by Peni R. Griffin, is about a young girl named Pudge who is sent to stay with her uncle on a farm in Charles Town, West Virginia during World War II. Pudge helps out on the farm and is surprised to learn that the locals have superstitions involving the geese that flock in the river valley every spring. Pudge gradually learns why the geese are so important to the community and joins in the celebration of their return. As Pudge becomes more involved in the life of the farm, she begins to look forward to the annual goose moon, a time of anticipation and renewal. The Goose Moon teaches readers about a lesser-known piece of American culture, while teaching important lessons about family, community, and tradition.
