The Glass Bead Game is a complex intellectual game played by a select few in the utopian province of Castalia. Knecht is a highly respected figure in Castalia, and his mastery of the game is unparalleled. He is sent on a journey of self-discovery, however, and must confront the contradictions of the society he is a part of and the individual he has become.
