The Gay Science (the Joyful Wisdom) is an 1882 book by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche which explores the concept of truth, and morality in an open, questioning, and often humorous way. The book is divided into four sections, beginning with a preface outlining the purpose of the book and the main ideas, followed by aphorisms and poems exploring religion, philosophy, and culture. Nietzsche argues that morality is not absolute and changes from society to society, as does truth. He challenges conventional wisdom and attacking both religion and the traditional institutions of society, proposing new precedents for body, spirit, and society. Nietzsche also discusses the idea of the "eternal recurrence" of all that ever was, and our duty to take responsibility for every action and to "affirm life". Ultimately, the book encourages its readers to embrace life joyfully and with passion, no matter the circumstances.
