The Education of Henry Adams: Autobiography of an American Historian is the story of Henry Adams’s life as an American historian over the course of a century. Born in the mid-1800s to a family of intellectuals, Adams experienced a privileged upbringing and received an elite education in both the United States and Europe. After becoming a Harvard professor, he moved on to become a journalist, author, and even a presidential advisor. This autobiography traces Adams’ life from childhood to old age but focuses mainly on the period from 1870 to 1912, during which he experienced unprecedented technological changes and challenges to his comfort zone, ultimately pushing him to reflect on his life and its purpose. He eventually concluded, “Life is, in fact, a battle.” Despite the sometimes traumatic experience of adapting to a changing world, Adams used his perspective to create a philosophy he dubbed “Absolute Relativity.” In it, he argues that all knowledge is relative, and education must be geared toward the whole person and not just the intellect. At its core, The Education of Henry Adams is an insightful autobiography that transcends time.
