Silent Spring is a 1962 environmental science book by Rachel Carson. The book is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. It documents the adverse environmental effects caused by the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Carson accuses the chemical industry of spreading disinformation, and public officials of accepting the industry's marketing claims unquestioningly. Silent Spring made a case for the need of preventative environmental regulation and public education on the health risks of pesticides.
