Running on Empty is a memoir by author Jonathon Hoover about his personal struggles with depression and substance abuse. It details his journey from the depths of mental illness and addiction to recovery and the journey of self-discovery that follows. The story begins with Hoover living in Boston, working as a cook and struggling with depression and using drugs to substitute for his emotional needs. As he descends further into addiction, he begins to experience other social and financial issues while grappling with past traumas. In an attempt to make sense of his life, Hoover embarks on a trek to New Orleans, seeking spiritual healing and guidance. Along the way, Hoover faces many obstacles, including hitchhiking, a robbery, and an arrest. After arriving in New Orleans, Hoover finds support in the form of counseling and spirituality. He also discovers new ways of connecting with himself, others, and his higher power. With this newfound support, he is able to eventually find his way out of the darkness and back to a healthier life.
