π‘ Technology & the Future
Program or Be Programmed by Douglas Rushkoff is a book about the implications of living in a world filled with technology in which people are passive users of the user interface, rather than active participants in its creation. The author argues that digital literacy is now the key to individual empowerment necessary for taking control of our future in the rapidly changing world of digital media. Rushkoff looks at our early understanding of computers as tools to help gain control of our finances, education, and even help us to become more efficient. He explains that technology today is often used as a distraction, as a way to avoid our real-life problems. He outlines the dangers of this passivity, including its potential to create a world in which only the privileged are aware of the consequences of their technology choices. He argues that citizens should learn to program in order to gain greater control over their lives. He concludes by demonstrating how individuals can take steps to become more resourceful and independent digital citizens.
