Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina is one of the most acclaimed novels ever written. The story follows Anna, a beautiful young woman married to a prominent government official in late 19th century St. Petersburg. After meeting the dashing Count Vronsky, however, Anna embarks upon an ill-fated love affair, risking everything she holds dear and sparking a moral scandal that will follow her until the very end of her life. At the same time, Tolstoy also addresses the pitfalls associated with marriage and family life, and much of the novel is dedicated to the confusing and conflicting emotions experienced by those in love. The story features an expansive cast of characters and is often lauded for its realistic and captivating dialogue, as well as its cleverly crafted plot and attention to the underlying psychological motivations of each character. Along with its unforgettable ending, the novel is a masterful exploration of the human heart and mind.
