George Orwell's 1984 is an iconic dystopian novel about the dangers of an authoritarian government. In the novel, the protagonist Winston Smith is a low-ranking government worker living in Oceania, a totalitarian state ruled by a figure called Big Brother. Winston hates the oppressive government, but feels powerless to change it. He eventually joins a rebel organization, the Brotherhood, only to come to the realization that Big Brother's power is absolute. Winston's journey shows how a totalitarian government destroys freedom and individuality, and creates a constant state of fear and repression in its citizens.
