Democracy in America, written by French political thinker and historian Alexis de Tocqueville, is a 19th-century text that focuses on the American political system and society. Volume I examines the structure of the American government, the branches of American government, and the development of the American democracy. Volume II focuses on the American social structure, its philosophy, the influence of religion and morality, and the effects of democracy on economic and social life. Both partake in a detailed analysis of how religious beliefs, state governments, local associations, and private individuals interacted to shape the unique form of democracy developed by the American people.
