Brave New World is a dystopian novel by Aldous Huxley that was first published in 1932. It takes place in the year 2540, in a world where the population is strictly controlled by a totalitarian government. The citizens of the World State are strongly encouraged to take a drug called soma, which suppresses emotions and distracted from ideas of non-conformity and creativity. The protagonist, Bernard Marx, is an outsider in society and soon discovers the advancement in quality of life has been achieved through social and scientific engineering. He visits an isolated reservation of traditional people and then faces the harsh realities of the World State and its new society.
