This book, written by Henry Sumner Maine in 1861, examines the connections between law and early societies. It focuses on ancient Roman law, but also looks at the legal systems found in the classical world and in other primitive communities. Maine observes the emergence of legal systems as a result of the development of property relations, family structures, and tribal affiliations. He also suggests that law in ancient societies was connected to the political, religious, and economic structure of the community. He argues that legal systems developed as a result of social change, and that law was essential in maintaining order and protecting individual rights. In addition, he suggests that law can be an important tool to promote social progress. The book is still used today as a standard in the course of legal history.
