Ptolemy developed a geocentric model of the universe from "summary" of To Explain the World by Steven Weinberg

Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer who lived in the second century AD, put forward a theory that gained widespread acceptance and held sway for over a thousand years. His geocentric model of the universe placed the Earth at the center, with the planets and stars revolving around it in perfect circles. Ptolemy's model was based on the idea that celestial bodies moved in circles, known as deferents, with smaller circles, called epicycles, superimposed on them. This complex system was able to predict the positions of the planets and stars with a reasonable degree of accuracy, and it became the standard explanation for the movements of celestial bodies for centuries to come. The geocentric model was not without its flaws, however. One of the main criticisms of Ptolemy's system was that it required a large number of epicycles to accurately predict the movements of the planets. This led some astronomers to question the underlying assumptions of the model and to propose alternative explanations for the motion of the heavens. Despite its shortcomings, the geocentric model remained the dominant view of the universe until the time of Copernicus in the 16th century. Copernicus' heliocentric model, which placed the Sun at the center of the solar system with the planets orbiting around it, eventually replaced Ptolemy's geocentric model as the prevailing explanation for the movement of celestial bodies. While Ptolemy's geocentric model has long since been superseded by more accurate and comprehensive theories, his work remains an important milestone in the history of astronomy. It exemplifies the human desire to understand the cosmos and the creative ways in which we have sought to explain the world around us.
