Changing environments can facilitate habit change from "summary" of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life & Business by Charles Duhigg

In order to understand how habits can be changed, it is important to recognize the role that our environment plays in shaping our behavior. Environments are powerful cues that trigger habits, as they provide the context in which our habits operate. When we are in familiar environments, our habits are more likely to be on autopilot, as our brains have learned to associate certain cues with specific routines and rewards. However, when we find ourselves in new environments, our habits are disrupted, as the cues that trigger them are no longer present. This disruption of habits in new environments presents an opportunity for change. Because our habits are no longer operating on autopilot, we have the chance to consciously choose new behaviors that align with our goals and values. By taking advantage of this window of opportunity, we can establish new habits that better serve us and help us achieve the outcomes we desire. For example, if someone is trying to quit smoking, changing their environment can be a powerful strategy. By avoiding places and situations where they typically smoke, such as bars or social gatherings, they can disrupt the cues that trigger their smoking habit. This disruption can make it easier for them to resist the urge to smoke and choose healthier behaviors instead. Similarly, if someone is trying to establish a habit of regular exercise, changing their environment can help set them up for success. By creating a designated workout space in their home or joining a gym with a motivating atmosphere, they can make it easier to stick to their exercise routine. The new environment provides cues that trigger the desired behavior of working out, making it more likely that the habit will take hold.
  1. Changing environments can facilitate habit change by disrupting old habits and creating opportunities for new behaviors to take root. By being intentional about the environments we place ourselves in, we can set ourselves up for success in changing our habits and achieving our goals.
