Silence and solitude are important for deepening one's relationship with God from "summary" of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything by James Martin

In the midst of our busy lives, it can be challenging to find moments of peace and quiet to connect with God. Yet, this silence and solitude are crucial for deepening our relationship with the divine. When we carve out time to be alone with our thoughts, we create space for God to speak to us in ways that may be difficult to hear amidst the noise and distractions of everyday life. Silence allows us to quiet the constant chatter of our minds and listen for the still, small voice of God. In the absence of external stimuli, we can more easily focus our attention on the presence of the divine within and around us. Solitude, on the other hand, provides us with the opportunity to reflect on our lives, our choices, and our relationship with God without the influence of others. In these moments of quiet contemplation, we are better able to discern God's will for us and to deepen our understanding of our faith. When we take the time to be still and silent before God, we open ourselves up to a deeper level of intimacy and connection with the divine. It is in these moments of solitude that we can truly come to know ourselves and our place in the world in relation to God. The practice of silence and solitude is not easy in a world that values constant activity and noise. Yet, it is essential for nurturing our spiritual lives and growing closer to God. By making space for silence and solitude in our lives, we can cultivate a deeper sense of peace, joy, and purpose that comes from being in relationship with the divine.
