Language and concepts can limit our understanding of reality from "summary" of The Essence of the Heart Sutra by Dalai Lama,Dalai Lama XIV Bstan-ʼdzin-rgya-mtsho,Thupten Jinpa
Understanding the nature of reality is often clouded by the frameworks we use to interpret our experiences. Words and concepts serve as tools for communication; however, they can also create boundaries around our perception. When we approach reality through the lens of pre-established notions, we risk confining our awareness to a narrow perspective. For instance, the categorization of phenomena into rigid definitions limits the fluidity of experience. This confinement leads to a static understanding, where the dynamic and interconnected nature of existence is overlooked. Our labels—whether they describe emotions, states of being, or external circumstances—can obscure the underlying essence, which is often beyond the reach of language. As we navigate through life, the reliance on conceptual thinking can foster a sense of separation from the true nature of things. This detachment cultivates a dualistic viewpoint that distinguishes between self and other, subject and object. Such distinctions may feel necessary for comprehension, yet they can hinder a deeper appreciation of interconnectedness and impermanence. Habitual patterns of thought solidify preconceived notions, which further distort the perception of reality. This habitual thinking can cultivate attachment to beliefs, fostering a resistance to new insights or experiences that challenge the status quo. The richness of existence is thus diminished when limited by the constraints of linguistic structures.- One can cultivate a perspective that embraces the essence of reality, fostering a more profound connection with the world. This openness invites exploration beyond the confines of words, revealing the deep interdependence of all phenomena.
