Employing mnemonic devices for vocabulary retention from "summary" of THE DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST (TARGET 125+) by ASHOK KUMAR

One effective way to enhance your vocabulary retention is by using mnemonic devices. Mnemonic devices are memory aids that help you remember information more easily. By associating new words with familiar concepts or images, you can solidify your understanding and recall of those words. One popular mnemonic device is creating acronyms. Acronyms are formed by taking the first letter of each word in a list and creating a new word from those letters. For example, to remember the order of the planets in our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune), you can create the acronym "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles." Another mnemonic device is using visualization. Visualizing a word's meaning through mental images or drawings can make it more memorable. For instance, if you are trying to learn the word "ephemeral," which means lasting for a very short time, you could imagine a soap bubble popping quickly to represent something fleeting or transient. Additionally, associating new words with familiar sounds or rhymes can aid in retention. Creating rhymes or wordplay around a word can help you remember its meaning and pronunciation. For example, to remember the word "ubiquitous," meaning present, appearing, or found everywhere, you could create a rhyme like "Ubiquitous unicorn dances in the sky." Furthermore, using mnemonics related to word roots, prefixes, and suffixes can help you understand and remember the meanings of unfamiliar words. By breaking down words into their components and associating them with familiar terms, you can build a strong foundation for expanding your vocabulary. Incorporating mnemonic devices into your vocabulary learning routine can make the process more engaging and effective. By leveraging your creativity and imagination to connect new words with existing knowledge, you can enhance your retention and recall of vocabulary in a fun and meaningful way. So, next time you encounter a challenging word, try using a mnemonic device to make it stick in your memory.
