Fasting triggers the body to use stored fat for energy from "summary" of The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung

When we fast, our body goes into a state of low insulin. Since insulin is the hormone that tells our body to store fat, low insulin means that we stop storing fat. Instead, our body starts burning stored fat for energy. This process is known as fat oxidation. When we eat, our body uses the food we consume for energy. However, when we fast, our body has to turn to its fat stores for fuel. This is a natural response to not having food readily available for energy. Fasting also increases the production of hormones that help with fat burning. For example, fasting can increase the levels of norepinephrine, a hormone that helps break down fat cells for energy. This process is crucial for weight loss because it allows our body to tap into its fat reserves. Once our body starts using stored fat for energy, weight loss becomes more achievable. By fasting, we are essentially training our body to rely on fat stores for fuel instead of constantly consuming food for energy. Moreover, fasting helps to improve insulin sensitivity. When we fast, our body becomes more efficient at using insulin to help glucose enter our cells. This means that our body can better regulate blood sugar levels, which is essential for managing diabetes. By reducing insulin resistance through fasting, we can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and improve overall metabolic health.
  1. Fasting is a powerful tool for promoting fat loss and improving metabolic health. By triggering the body to use stored fat for energy, fasting can help with weight management and reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes. Embracing fasting as a lifestyle can have profound effects on our health and well-being.
