The psychology of violence has evolved over time from "summary" of The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker

The psychology of violence has evolved over time. In the past, people were more prone to resort to violence as a means of resolving conflicts. This was largely due to a lack of effective institutions for dispute resolution, leading individuals to take matters into their own hands. As societies developed and centralized governments emerged, however, the use of violence became increasingly regulated and controlled. One of the key factors in this evolution was the rise of the state monopoly on violence. As governments gained a monopoly on the legitimate use of force, individuals were less inclined to engage in violent behavior. This monopoly served as a deterrent against acts of violence, as individuals knew that the state would mete out punishment for such actions. Over time, this helped to reduce the prevalence of violence in society. Another important aspect of the evolution of the psychology of violence was the development of empathy and compassion. As societies progressed, people began to recognize the humanity of others and understand the impact of their actions on those around them. This led to a greater reluctance to harm others and a greater willingness to resolve conflicts through non-violent means. Furthermore, the spread of education and literacy played a role in reducing violence. As people became more educated, they were better able to understand the consequences of their actions and appreciate the value of peaceful coexistence. Education also helped to promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, allowing individuals to find non-violent solutions to conflicts.
  1. The psychology of violence has undergone a significant transformation over time. From a time when violence was a common and accepted means of conflict resolution, we have progressed to a point where violence is increasingly seen as unacceptable and counterproductive. This evolution has been driven by a combination of factors, including the establishment of state monopolies on violence, the development of empathy and compassion, and the spread of education and literacy. As a result, societies today are more peaceful and less prone to outbreaks of violence than they were in the past.
