The importance of objective values in shaping society from "summary" of The Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis
In the modern world, there is a disturbing trend towards subjectivism, where individuals are encouraged to believe that values are merely personal preferences. This philosophy undermines the very foundations of society, as it denies the existence of objective truth and morality. Without a shared understanding of right and wrong, society is left adrift, adrift in a sea of relativism. Objective values are crucial in shaping society because they provide a moral compass for individuals to navigate the complexities of life. When people adhere to universal principles of justice, compassion, and integrity, they can work together towards common goals and build a harmonious community. Without these shared values, society descends into chaos and conflict, as each person pursues their own selfish desires without regard for others. Furthermore, objective values serve as a bulwark against tyranny and oppression. When individuals recognize the inherent dignity and worth of every human being, they are less likely to condone or participate in acts of injustice and cruelty. In contrast, a society that rejects objective values is vulnerable to the rise of authoritarian regimes that trample on the rights of the weak and vulnerable. In the absence of objective values, society becomes a battleground of competing ideologies, each vying for dominance and control. This ideological warfare leads to polarization, divisiveness, and social unrest, as people become entrenched in their beliefs and demonize those who disagree with them. In such a society, dialogue and compromise become impossible, as each side views the other as fundamentally immoral and unworthy of respect.- The importance of objective values in shaping society cannot be overstated. Without a shared moral framework, society is at risk of succumbing to the forces of relativism, subjectivism, and tyranny. It is only by recognizing and upholding objective values that we can build a society that is just, compassionate, and free.
