Selfesteem is essential for a fulfilling life from "summary" of Six Pillars of Self-Esteem by Nathaniel Branden
Self-esteem is the reputation we acquire with ourselves. It is the disposition to experience oneself as competent to cope with the basic challenges of life and as worthy of happiness. It is confidence in the efficacy of our mind, in our ability to think. It is the conviction that we are capable of learning what we need to learn and of understanding what we need to understand in order to be successful in the pursuit of worthy goals. It is the expectation that success, achievement, fulfillment -- happiness -- are right and natural for us. Self-esteem is not the euphoria or buoyancy that may be experienced in temporary states of excitement or achievement, but a lasting sense of self-confidence and self-respect. It is not something we can gain or lose in a day, but rather something we build over time. It is an attribute of our consciousness, not merely the product of our experiences. It is the integrative mechanism that enables a person to think, to enjoy life, to be productive and to love. It is what gives us the courage to be authentic and to embrace our true self. Without self-esteem, we are likely to feel self-doubt and self-criticism, leading to negative self-perceptions and a lack of confidence in our abilities. We may feel unworthy of love and happiness, and struggle to find fulfillment in life. Our relationships may suffer, as we are unable to assert our needs and boundaries. We may also be more susceptible to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. In contrast, when we have a healthy sense of self-esteem, we are better equipped to face life's challenges with resilience and optimism. We are more likely to pursue our goals with determination and perseverance, knowing that we are worthy of success. We are able to form deep and meaningful connections with others, as we are comfortable with who we are and can authentically share ourselves with those around us.- Self-esteem is the foundation upon which a fulfilling life is built. It is the key to unlocking our true potential and living authentically. By nurturing our self-esteem, we can cultivate a sense of worthiness, confidence, and inner peace that will guide us towards a life of joy and fulfillment.
