Seismic waves, generated by earthquakes and explosions, provide scientists with valuable information about the internal structures of the Earth. For example, the presence of a shadow zone for S waves beyond 105 degrees from an earthquake's epicenter indicates the existence of a liquid outer core that blocks the transmission of S waves. Surface waves, which travel along the Earth's surface, provide additional information about the Earth's structure. These waves have longer wavelengths and lower frequencies than body waves but can cause more significant damage during an earthquake. By studying the behavior of surface waves, scientists can further refine their understanding of the Earth's internal layers and properties.- Seismic waves are a powerful tool for investigating the internal structures of the Earth.
