The internal structures of the Earth can be inferred from seismic waves from "summary" of Physics 11 by British Columbia. Schools Department. Curriculum Development Branch

Seismic waves, generated by earthquakes and explosions, provide scientists with valuable information about the internal structures of the Earth. These waves travel through the Earth at different speeds and in different directions, depending on the materials they encounter. By analyzing the behavior of seismic waves, scientists can infer the composition and density of the Earth's layers. There are two main types of seismic waves: body waves and surface waves. Body waves, which include primary (P) waves and secondary (S) waves, travel through the Earth's interior. P waves are compressional waves that travel faster than S waves and can pass through solids, liquids, and gases. S waves are transverse waves that can only travel through solids and are slower than P waves. Body waves change speed and direction as they encounter different materials within the Earth. By studying how seismic waves are refracted and reflected at boundaries between different layers, scientists can determine the boundaries between the Earth's crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. For example, the presence of a shadow zone for S waves beyond 105 degrees from an earthquake's epicenter indicates the existence of a liquid outer core that blocks the transmission of S waves. Surface waves, which travel along the Earth's surface, provide additional information about the Earth's structure. These waves have longer wavelengths and lower frequencies than body waves but can cause more significant damage during an earthquake. By studying the behavior of surface waves, scientists can further refine their understanding of the Earth's internal layers and properties.
  1. Seismic waves are a powerful tool for investigating the internal structures of the Earth. By analyzing the speed, direction, and behavior of these waves, scientists can infer the composition and density of the Earth's layers and gain insights into processes such as plate tectonics and mantle convection. The study of seismic waves continues to advance our understanding of the dynamic and complex nature of our planet.
