The nervous system facilitates communication within the body from "summary" of NCERT Exemplar Problems-Solutions BIOLOGY class 12th by Arihant Experts

The nervous system plays a crucial role in facilitating communication within the body. It is responsible for transmitting signals between different parts of the body, allowing them to work together seamlessly. This system comprises the brain, spinal cord, and a network of nerves that carry messages back and forth. The nervous system functions by sending electrical signals called nerve impulses. These impulses travel along nerve cells, known as neurons, at incredibly high speeds. When a stimulus is detected, such as touching a hot stove, sensory neurons transmit this information to the brain. The brain then processes the information and sends a response back to the muscles, telling them to move the hand away. In addition to transmitting signals, the nervous system also coordinates complex processes within the body. For example, the autonomic nervous system regulates activities like heart rate, digestion, and breathing, without conscious effort. This ensures that essential functions are carried out efficiently, even when we are not actively thinking about them. Furthermore, the nervous system plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis, or internal balance, within the body. It constantly monitors various parameters, such as temperature and blood pressure, and makes adjustments to keep these factors within a narrow range. This helps to ensure that the body functions optimally and remains healthy.
  1. The nervous system is essential for communication within the body. It allows different organs and systems to work together harmoniously, ensuring that essential processes are carried out efficiently. Without this intricate network of communication, the body would not be able to respond to its environment or maintain internal balance.
