Value effort and perseverance over natural talent from "summary" of Mindset - Updated Edition by Carol Dweck

In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They're wrong. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. It may be hard to believe, but many people with a fixed mindset don't really want to be challenged because it could reveal their deficiencies and undermine their sense of superiority. How well they do is crucial because setbacks are seen as a statement about their basic abilities. To someone with a growth mindset, the ideal is to learn and improve. Setbacks are a natural part of the learning process. If you don't try, or if you don't persevere when things are tough, you won't get the benefits of a growth mindset. Some people with a fixed mindset can't afford to try something and fail because that would mean they weren't smart or talented. So, they avoid challenges, give up easily, and lose interest when things get tough. But to learn and grow, you need to seek challenges, persist when things get tough, and see effort as the path to mastery. Effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment. People in a growth mindset don't just seek challenge—they thrive on it. The bigger the challenge, the more they stretch. They see effort as a way of stretching their abilities. The fixed mindset, on the other hand, avoids challenges because they are afraid of looking bad if they fail. Growth mindset people do confront their deficiencies and try to remedy them. The result is a more tenacious approach to life.
