Offer choices to help children feel in control from "summary" of Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood by Jim Fay,Charles Fay

When children feel in control, they are more likely to cooperate and make positive choices. One way to empower children and give them a sense of control is by offering choices. By providing options, children feel like they have a say in what happens to them, which can reduce power struggles and increase their sense of independence. When offering choices, it is important to set limits and boundaries. For example, instead of asking an open-ended question like, "What do you want to wear today?" you can offer two acceptable choices, such as "Do you want to wear the blue shirt or the red shirt?" This way, the child feels like they have some control over the decision, but you are still setting limits on what is acceptable. It is also important to offer choices that you are willing to follow through on. If you give a child a choice and then go back on your word, they will quickly learn that their choices do not really matter. By consistently following through on the choices you offer, children will learn that their decisions have an impact and that they can trust you to stick to your word. Offering choices can also help children develop problem-solving skills. When faced with a decision, children have to think about the consequences of each choice and make a decision based on their preferences. This process helps them develop critical thinking skills and learn how to make decisions independently.
  1. Offering choices to children can help them feel in control of their lives, reduce power struggles, and promote independence and problem-solving skills. By giving children the opportunity to make decisions within set boundaries, you can empower them and help them become more confident and responsible individuals.
