Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons between species from "summary" of Chemistry by Russell Kuhtz

Redox reactions are chemical reactions in which there is a transfer of electrons between the reactants. This transfer of electrons is what gives the name "redox" to these reactions, which is short for reduction-oxidation reactions. In a redox reaction, one species loses electrons (is oxidized) while another species gains those electrons (is reduced). This transfer of electrons is what allows for the change in oxidation states of the different species involved in the reaction. The species that loses electrons is called the reducing agent, while the species that gains electrons is called the oxidizing agent. The reducing agent is oxidized because it loses electrons, while the oxidizing agent is reduced because it gains electrons. This exchange of electrons allows for the formation of new chemical bonds and the creation of new products. The key point to understand in redox reactions is that it is the transfer of electrons between species that drives the reaction forward. Without this transfer of electrons, the reaction would not occur. This transfer of electrons is what allows for the conversion of reactants into products and the release of energy that is often associated with redox reactions.
  1. Redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons between species, with one species being oxidized and another being reduced. This transfer of electrons is what allows for the formation of new chemical bonds and the creation of new products. Understanding the role of electrons in redox reactions is essential for understanding the underlying chemistry of these reactions.
