Resilient systems withstand shocks from "summary" of Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
When we observe systems that are capable of withstanding shocks, we are witnessing a key feature of resilience. These systems possess the ability to absorb disturbances and adapt in response, ensuring they continue to function effectively despite unforeseen challenges. Resilient systems are not merely robust or stable; they actively benefit from stressors, becoming stronger and more capable as a result of adversity. Consider the human body, a prime example of a resilient system. When exposed to moderate physical stress through exercise, our muscles grow stronger and more resilient over time. Similarly, our immune system strengthens in response to exposure to pathogens, developing immunity to future infections. By facing and overcoming challenges, our bodies become more capable of handling stressors in the future. In contrast, fragile systems lack the ability to adapt and respond to shocks, making them vulnerable to disruption and failure. These systems are easily damaged or destroyed by unexpected events, as they lack the capacity to absorb and recover from disturbances. Fragile systems are characterized by brittleness and a lack of flexibility, leaving them susceptible to collapse under pressure. The concept of antifragility takes resilience a step further, suggesting that certain systems can actually benefit from volatility and uncertainty. Antifragile systems thrive on disorder, chaos, and stress, using these factors to improve and grow stronger over time. By embracing variability and randomness, antifragile systems harness the power of adversity to enhance their performance and adaptability.- Resilient systems possess the capacity to withstand shocks and maintain functionality in the face of adversity. These systems are able to adapt and recover from disturbances, ultimately becoming stronger and more robust as a result. By contrast, fragile systems are vulnerable to disruption and failure, lacking the flexibility and adaptability needed to survive unexpected challenges. Antifragile systems go beyond resilience, actively benefiting from stressors and volatility to improve their performance and capabilities.
