Anthropic principle shapes universe from "summary" of A Brief History of Time by Stephen W. Hawking

One can imagine that God created the universe and all its laws to be just right for the development of life. The laws of science are consistent with this possibility. However, this does not prove the existence of God. The idea that there is a multiverse – a set of multiple universes – could also explain why our universe is the way it is. If there are many universes, each with its own laws, then some of them are bound to be suitable for life. In a universe that is infinite in space and time, anything that can happen will happen somewhere at some time. One could argue that we are here to observe our universe because it is one of the few that are suitable for life forms like us. This is known as the anthropic principle. The anthropic principle can explain why the laws of the universe are such that life can exist. The laws of nature seem to be fine-tuned to allow a universe that contains life. This fine-tuning could be a result of a grand design or it could be due to the existence of many universes with different laws. If the laws of the universe were different, we might not be here to ask why they are the way they are. The anthropic principle suggests that the universe must be the way it is in order for us to be here to observe it. This idea raises the question of whether we are just a random byproduct of the universe or if there is a deeper meaning to our existence. The fact that the universe seems to be fine-tuned for life is a profound mystery that continues to puzzle scientists and philosophers alike.
