Throughout the novel, the protagonist Pip experiences a significant evolution in his beliefs and values. At the beginning of the story, Pip is a young boy with a deep desire to climb the social ladder and become a gentleman. He is influenced by societal expectations and longs to escape his humble beginnings as a blacksmith's apprentice. Pip's encounter with the convict Magwitch in the graveyard sets off a chain of events that ultimately lead to his transformation. Initially, Pip is terrified of Magwitch and feels repulsed by his rough appearance and criminal background.
